Legal is one of the most expensive categories on Google Ads. When clicks cost that much, the gap between a well-run and a poorly run account is not a few percent; it decides whether paid search is profitable at all. Most of the waste I see in law firm accounts comes from two places: campaigns that mix practice areas, and tracking that counts every call as a lead regardless of what happened on it.

How people search for a lawyer

Legal searches usually combine a practice area with a location and a sense of urgency: personal injury lawyer, family law attorney, DUI lawyer, business litigation, estate planning, often with “near me” or a city. Some searches describe the situation rather than the service, such as a car accident, a divorce or a dispute with a business partner. Others are informational, from people researching their rights with no intention of hiring yet.

That mix is why practice-area campaigns matter. Each area gets its own keywords, ads, landing page and budget, based on what a case is worth to your firm. For Bennett and Fitzgerald, campaigns targeted high-intent keywords such as “personal injury lawyer”, “family law attorney” and “business litigation expert”, with geo-targeting on the firm’s service area.

Call tracking and intake quality

For most firms, the phone is where cases start. Google’s phone call conversion tracking counts calls that last longer than a minimum length you set. That’s useful, but a long call can still be a wrong fit: a practice area you don’t handle, a location you don’t serve, or someone looking for free advice.

So I treat tracking in layers:

  1. Track every source: calls from ads, calls from the website, and contact forms, set up through Google Tag Manager and GA4.
  2. Qualify the leads: work with your intake team or CRM to mark which enquiries were qualified and which became signed clients.
  3. Feed it back: send qualified or signed cases back to Google Ads as offline conversions, for example with Enhanced Conversions for Leads, so bidding learns to find more of those people.

Intake also matters on your side. If calls from ads go unanswered or to voicemail, a large part of the budget is lost before anyone talks to the caller. My analytics and tracking setup explains the technical side.

What this looked like for Bennett and Fitzgerald

Bennett and Fitzgerald needed more client leads at a lower cost while keeping lead quality high. We built a campaign around high-intent legal keywords, set up lead tracking that combined CRM tools with Google Ads conversion tracking and linked leads to revenue, tested ads, landing pages and calls to action, and updated the landing page. Client leads increased 30%, cost per lead fell 25%, click-through rate went from 6–7% to 12%, and Quality Score for key ads rose from 5 to 8. Read the Bennett and Fitzgerald case study for the details.

Mistakes that waste law firm budgets

  • Broad match without guardrails. Searches for free legal advice, law school, paralegal jobs or legal templates can absorb expensive clicks.
  • All practice areas in one campaign. Budget follows volume, not case value.
  • Counting every call as a lead. Bidding gets trained on calls that were never going to become clients.
  • Sending ads to the homepage. Someone searching after a car accident wants a page about car accident claims.
  • Targeting outside your jurisdiction. Leads you can’t take still cost the same per click.
  • No feedback from intake. Without it, nobody knows which keywords produce signed cases.

How I manage law firm accounts

We start with your practice areas, case values, service area and intake process. If you want a second opinion on an existing account first, my Google Ads audit gives you a recorded video review with prioritized recommendations. Then I restructure campaigns, fix tracking and manage the account ongoing. The first 30 days are a learning phase; scaling usually happens in months two and three.

Every two weeks you get a Loom video explaining results and changes, plus a live dashboard. You work directly with me, there’s no contract, and the account belongs to your firm. See what’s included in my Google Ads management or browse more case studies.

FAQ

Google Ads for law firms: common questions

How much does Google Ads management for a law firm cost?
Management starts at $750/month. Your ad budget is separate and paid directly to Google. The full breakdown is on the pricing page.
What ad budget does a law firm need?
A minimum of $1,500–$2,000/month in ad spend is usually recommended so the account generates enough data to optimize. Legal clicks can be expensive, so firms that spend, or are willing to spend, $2,000+/month are the best fit.
How do you measure lead quality for a law firm?
I track calls and form submissions, then work with your intake process to separate qualified enquiries from the rest. Where possible, signed cases are sent back to Google Ads as offline conversions so bidding learns which leads matter.
How long before Google Ads brings in new cases?
Calls and enquiries can start in the first week. The first 30 days are a learning phase focused on gathering data and testing; significant scaling usually happens in months two and three.
Do you require a contract?
No. I don’t use binding contracts. Everything is built inside your firm’s own Google Ads account, so you keep the account and its data.
